The Ampère Museum is composed of several rooms, each containing a different collection.

In particular, you can find the collection "Ampère's electrodynamics" and discover the basics of electrodynamics by repeating 12 of Ampère's major experiments.

Each experiment is equipped with a command button, simple written explanations and additional explanations including an animation accessible on your mobile thanks to a QR code.

Ampère's electrodynamics

In 1820, Ampère unified the magnetic and electrical phenomena that had previously been considered independent.

The magnetised needle deflects under the influence of dynamic electricity. Magnetism is due to currents in matter and a spirally wound conductor behaves like a magnetised bar. The earth's magnetic field itself is due to electrical currents within the earth.

Ampère characterised the electrical forces between conductors and their directions.

Together with the physicist Arago, he invented the temporary magnetisation of iron and the electromagnet.

Together with the English scientist Faraday, he invented the first mechanisms for permanent rotation generated by an electric current, which prefigured the electric motor.
