The Ampère Museum is a scientific and interactive museum near Lyon, dedicated to electricity, science and technology, as well as to the life and discoveries of André-Marie Ampère (1775–1836), one of the major founders of electromagnetism.
Located in Poleymieux-au-Mont-d’Or, in the Lyon metropolitan area and accessible by public transport, the museum is housed in the home where Ampère spent part of his childhood and youth. This historic site is now a science museum where visitors can explore physics and electricity through numerous interactive experiments.
With 14 rooms and nearly 1,000 m² of exhibition space, the Ampère Museum offers a journey linking the history of science, hands-on experiments and today’s technologies. Visitors can discover Ampère’s life and work, experiment with electrical and electromagnetic phenomena, and explore the history of electricity from Antiquity to the major scientific and technological challenges of today: electricity generation, wind and solar power, particle accelerators, computing and quantum computing.
The museum also presents important collections of historic scientific instruments, rare electrical machines and objects illustrating the scientific and technical heritage associated with electricity and its many applications: radio, lighting, medicine, communications, theatre and everyday life.
At once a historic house, a science museum and a place for experimentation, the Ampère Museum invites visitors of all ages to understand, through observation and hands-on experience, the scientific phenomena at the heart of the major transitions of the 21st century.
